The defendant's guilt seems as evident as the blood found splattered on his clothes. But Vail doesn't concern himself with questions of guilt or innocence. chuldig? Onschuldig? Dat zijn vragen waar de machtige en zeer bekende advocaat Martin Vail (Richard Gere) zich niet mee bezighoudt. Het is namelijk zijn taak om de veradchte te verdedigen. Helemaal als deze zaak zijn naam op de voorpagina's van alle kranten zal krijgen en hem weer verder op weg helpt met zijn carrière. Wanneer hij in een bar de achtervolging volgt van een verdacht van de moord op de plaatselijke aartsbisschop, weet hij dat hij die zaak moet hebben. Wanneer Vail echter met de zaak aanvangt, blijkt de verdachte koorknaap (Edward Norton) niet zo onschuldig als hij in eerste instantie lijkt. Dan begint de harde taak om de aanklager, zijn ex-vriendin Laura Linney, zijn medewerkers, de jury, de rest van de wereld en vooral zichzelf te bewijzen dat de jongen vrijgesproken moet worden.
